Volunteer support service

Our new volunteer support service is expected to be trialled in two localities of Norwich from the autumn of 2014.

The new service would be based on an Age UK Norwich proposal specifically for NHS Norwich CCG.

Both organisations are investing money into the first pathfinder year, with the expectation that evidence will show it’s making a real difference to people’s lives.

The model is based on the best evidence available from a national pilot, run by Age UK in Cornwall. Early results there show that in the first year, of the100 older people who were helped, people’s mental wellbeing was significantly improved and there were 30% fewer hospital admissions.

This model won an award from the Health Service Journal magazine for how it assists people with ‘Long Term Conditions’

Newquay GP Dr Tamsin Anderson commented: “I have been encouraged to look at patients where I thought their dependency levels would only increase and see that with a relatively small level of intervention they can be encouraged back to a much lower level of dependency.”

The model can be seen in an Age UK InfoGram
