    Last year 1.1 billion prescription items were dispensed in primary care at a cost of £9.2billion. It is important that the NHS achieves the greatest value from the money that it spends.

    The NHS is consulting on what a GP or nurse should not routinely be prescribing - or to put it another way, what items most people could reasonably be expected to buy for themselves at their pharmacy.
